Nittany Lion Inn Lobby Artwork Project


The Nittany Lion Inn has launched a national competition to purchase or commission a framed painting or bas-relief for the newly renovated lobby on the Inn's first floor. According to James Purdum, general manager of Penn State Hospitality Services, the painting should make a strong artistic statement and reflect the history and/or character of Penn State, from the opening of the Inn in 1931 to the present. The selected artist will be given an all-inclusive budget of $10,000 to complete the artwork and transport it to the Nittany Lion Inn for installation in August 2009.

A committee made up of Purdum, Palmer Museum of Art Director Jan Muhlert, Penn State architects and Hospitality Services' interior design consultant will select the winning artist and work with him/her throughout the creation of the artwork. Entry materials, including a description of the artist's approach to this project and examples of recent work (on slides or in PowerPoint presentation), are due January 15, 2009. The winner will be announced February 15, 2009, and the committee will approve the final design by April 6, 2009.
